Mozambique: New metropolitan areas in the pipeline - Notícias
The movement for an independent Palestinian state claims Jerusalem as its capital.
The Mozambican Foreign Ministry on Monday released a statement reiterating the government’s support for the right of the Palestinian people to independence and self-determination.
The position was made clear by the Mozambican ambassador to Indonesia, Maria Gustava, speaking at an Extraordinary Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine and Jerusalem, held in Jakarta on Sunday and Monday.
Gustava stressed the “inalienable right” of the Palestinian people to their independence “with Jerusalem as their capital”.
She added that Mozambique welcomed the UN resolution of 29 November 2012 which granted the State of Palestine the status of observer at the United Nations. This decision, she said, “symbolizes the unconditional support of the international community for the creation of two independent and sovereign states, based on the 1967 borders”.
The Foreign Ministry release thus clarifies Mozambique’s position towards the Israel-Palestine conflict, in the wake of the announcement that a senior member of the ruling Frelimo Party has been invited to a conference organized by Israeli bodies in Jerusalem.
Frelimo parliamentary deputy Edson Macuacua, who chairs the parliamentary commission on constitutional and legal affairs, is attending a conference in Jerusalem entitled “Africa and Israel: Policy and Leadership”. The conference is co-organised by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the Harry S. Truman Institute for Peace, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Africa Centre for Peace and Democracy.
Among others known to be attending the conference is the leader of the Kenyan opposition, Raila Odinga.
Contacted by AIM, a Mozambican diplomatic source said that Macuacua’s attendance at the conference in no way alters the government’s policy on the Middle East, which supports the creation of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, co-existing with the Israeli state.
