O País / Phenoxymethylpenicillin was for sale in private pharmacies
The Mozambican Ministry of Health (MISAU) has recently withdrawn a batch of phenoxymethylpenicillin from sale in private pharmacies after finding that it was not fit for human consumption.
Phenoxymethylpenicillin is an antibiotic used to treat respiratory infections and opportunistic diseases among people with HIV/Aids, among other diseases.
A press release from MISAU indicates that the shortcomings of the product, manufactured in India and valid until March 2018, were detected during regular inspections carried out by the sector.
The statement adds that the antibiotic, imported by distributor Generics & Especialistas, was never distributed to or used in public health units.
Investigations are ongoing, with the accountability of those involved also in review.
