Mozambique: Government and Islamic Council seek to contain radicalism

The provincial government of Cabo Delgado met the local Muslim community last week to analyse the events of the beginning of the month, attributed to radical groups professing the Islamic religion.

At the time, the Islamic Council distanced itself from the events and condemned the attacks on Mocímboa da Praia, reasserting its commitment to cooperating with the local authorities to ensure peace and stability.

The Islamic community last week said that it would continue cooperating in surveillance and would report any signs of radicalism which might endanger peace and stability.

The religious association stressed that events in Mocímboa “do not represent the Muslim community, let alone the Islamic Council in the country”.

The meeting concluded unanimously that the outbreak of Islamic fundamentalism in the country threatened to undermine the peaceful coexistence of Muslims with those of other religious persuasions, and arrest the country’s development.

The Islamic Council is also responsible for issuing opinions on the entry and functioning of Muslim confessions in the country, and agrees on the need to strengthen cooperation between the police and religious and community leaders in order to prevent illegal activity.

The meeting also highlighted the need to promote civic education for young people in the affected areas, which will be translated into a plan of action, with tasks and responsibilities, monitoring mechanisms and deadlines, to prevent radicalism of any kind undermining national stability.
