Mozambique and Belarus agree to fight terrorism

The Ministries of Interior of Mozambique and Belarus signed a cooperation agreement in Maputo yesterday in the area of security and public order, focusing on basic and specialised training in combating terrorism and money laundering and ostensive patrolling and intelligence.

Signed by Jaime Basílio Monteiro and Igor Shunevich, respective home affairs ministers of the two countries, the agreement initially envisages Mozambican staff travelling to Belarus in order to be trained in protection and investigation. The agreement also foresees as priority actions the development of institutional links between police academies and other police training institutions, as well as the exchange of intelligence.

Speaking at the signing, Basílio Monteiro explained that the training would better prepare Mozambican staff to combat and prevent offences. Professional personnel would be in a position to anticipate criminal phenomena and improve the environment to combat crime.

The two countries see the agreement as an important contribution to strengthening and deepening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two ministries in the security and internal order environment.

“We want this training to equip our cadres with more means for dealing with crime and ostensive patrolling, guaranteeing the security of our citizens and their assets,” said the Interior Minister.

Belarus Minister of the Internal Affairs Igor Shunevich said the agreement symbolised the desire of his government to establish and develop cooperative relations with Mozambique in the field of public order.

“We are ready to welcome the Mozambicans as soon as they are selected. We want to prove that we can make a great contribution to the training of Mozambican personnel in order to ensure security,” he said.

The Belarus Minister of Internal Affairs has been in Maputo since last Friday as part of a five-day visit to Mozambique that aims to deepen friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries in the area of security and public order. Minister Shuvenich, who is visiting Mozambique at the invitation of the Minister of the Interior, met the president yesterday.
