The Mozambican cyclist Norberto Varinde, also known as “Captain Morgan”, pedalled 1,200 kilometres by bicycle on a one-week ride from Maputo to Beira to promote an education and road safety campaign for motorists and pedestrians, in particular among communities living along national highways EN1 and EN6.
“Captain Morgan” left the capital on Saturday morning at around 7:00 a.m., and arrived in Beira early last Friday evening.
Speaking about the difficult moments on the trip which brought together dozens of cyclists with the goal of raising awareness of road safety, the ‘Captain’ mentioned fatigue, pain and high temperatures, nevertheless insufficient to make him give up his goal.
“The mission on this trip was to distribute stickers with messages that appeal to road safety for cyclists. From Maputo to Beira, I was able to paste 1,200 on vehicles. I take a positive view of this trip because I reached my goal, but only thanks to the strong support I had from different institutions, drivers and the population in general,” Captain Morgan said.
Varinde said he would now work for a while in Sofala and later move on to other provinces.
“I have a project up my sleeve called ‘Sweat to Protect’, to implement in the municipality of Quelimane in partnership with some institutions. I will raise the awareness of taxi-cyclists to provide a safer service to their users.”
“I call on young people not to start drinking, smoking and losing sleep at an early age, and to think of their futures. I am 50 years old and I did 1,200 kilometres in a week, and I managed to do this because when I was young I took good care of myself,” he said.
