At least 11 young members of a group that recently carried out attacks against police units in Mocímboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province, have been seized by members of the public in Palma.
Palma district administrator David said the youths were held by members of the public when they sought refuge in the area and turned over to the police.
“The population in Palma has shown considerable maturity in stopping the incursion of part of the group of armed men who, for reasons still unknown, attacked police units in the district of Mocímboa da Praia,” weekly Domingo quotes Machimbuko as saying.
“We have warned families to be vigilant. It was after that that we captured some members of the group that tried to destabilise Mocímboa da Praia,” said Machimbuko.
Machimbuko says the population has also shown a high degree of responsibility vis-à-vis processes related to hydrocarbon exploration and exploration companies in the region.
The 11 individuals recently seized joined 52 others already detained by the Mozambican police on charges of being involved in this month’s attacks in Mocímboa da Praia. During the attacks, armed men killed two PRM officers and wounded another, then seized an unspecified number of weapons and about eight thousand rounds of ammunition.
About a week later, elements thought to be from the same group ambushed a police vehicle on the border between Mocímboa da Praia and Palma. Police pursuing the attackers killed at least 16 and captured 12 supposed members of the group.
