Mozambican conservation areas received more than 3,100 animals

Maputo Special Reserve (REM) and Zinave National Park (PNZ) conservation areas have received 3,108 animals already this year, 66 percent of the number forecast for 2017, according to a statement from the National Administration of Conservation Areas of Mozambique (ANAC).

The statement notes that REM received 2,325 animals, including 1,162 from Big Game Parks, Swaziland, 251 from the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve, South Africa, and the remainder from Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique.

Zinave Natonal Park, in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, received 783 animals, including 51 impala and two elephants from Zimbabwe, 387 pivas and 93 monkeys from Gorongosa National Park, and 250 buffalo from the Marromeu National Reserve (RNM).

Game Reserve 9, in Macossa district, Manica province, received 200 buffaloes from Marromeu National Reserve.

“This translocation operation constitutes a historic landmark, since it is the largest one ever undertaken in the country, and because Gorongosa Park and Maputo Reserve have moved some species of wildlife to other conservation areas,” the statement notes.

The Conservation Areas administration hopes that animal relocations like these will make conservation areas more attractive to tourists and stimulate investment in the sector.
