Will Nampula vote for a new Mayor in by-election? Government to decide within 30 days

The Mozambican government announced yesterday that it would, over the next 30 days, consider the situation of the vacancy created in the municipality of Nampula, northern Mozambique, by the murder of its mayor, Mahamudo Amurane, on 4 October.
In a press conference at the end of the weekly session of the Council of Ministers, spokeswoman Ana Comoana avoided referring to a by-election, saying only that the authorities would analyse all relevant aspects.
“The government will decide after considered evaluation,” she said.
Legally, the government has 30 days from the moment in which it became aware of the declaration of impediment of the mayor to make a decision, Comoana declared, adding that the executive had received Nampula’s municipal assembly’s declaration of definitive impediment of Amurane yesterday.

Mahamudo Amurane was shot dead at his residence in Nampula. The police announced last week that two people had been charged in connection with the murder.
Amurane’s death provoked riots and popular outrage in Nampula, where the victim was mayor since 2013, elected as candidate of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), Mozambique’s third largest political party.

Following public disagreements with the leadership of the MDM, Amurane had announced his intention to leave the party and run for a second term in municipal elections next year, either as an independent or affiliated with another political party.
