World Mental Health Day celebrations took place in Maputo on Monday under the motto, “Mental health in the workplace”, chosen to warn of the resulting stress.
In Africa, one in six patients seeking health care suffers from at least one type of mental disorder, but lack of information associated with shame often prevents the mentally ill seeking help.
One of the challenges accepted by Mozambique’s Health Ministry (MISAU) for the future is to increase the number of professionals dealing with mental illness. Currently, the country has just 13 qualified psychiatrists.
