Renamo says party delegate, one more member detained in Mocímboa da Praia

Renamo, the main opposition party in Mozambique, yesterday condemned the detention of two party members in Mocímboa da Praia, the scene of recent clashes between the police and a group of attackers.

The two members, Macassare Ansumane, a delegate from the Mwengue neighbourhood, and his brother-in-law, Herminio Matibango, were taken by police to the local police station on Saturday morning, and have since been denied any contact with family, the party or their lawyers.

Renamo spokesman António Muchanga told VOA that linking Renamo members to the violence on Thursday and Friday last week which left 16 dead, including 14 attackers and two police officers, was “political opportunism”.

“If there is evidence that they are involved in something, then let them be charged,” Muchanga said, expressing concern about the isolation of the two detainees.

On Thursday, a group of men attacked several police stations in Mocîmboa da Praia and took momentary control of the village near Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delegado province. The police regained control of the village early on Saturday.
