Government, civil society organisations, the private sector and the general public met in Maputo yesterday to discuss the future of the Internet in Mozambique, with civil society representatives saying that access to the internet is essential to streamline the country’s development process.
Eduardo Namburete, president of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (CEC) and one of the speakers at the conference, said he believed that the full exercise of citizenship would only be possible through constructive use of these platforms.
For its part, the government acknowledged that the expansion of Internet and Internet access throughout country was one of its greatest challenges.
Mozambique has one of the lowest levels of Internet access in the world, with only 6.4 percent of the population covered.
