Mozambique and Malawi authorities are investigating an incident involving Mozambican fishermen on Lake Chiuta on the border between the two countries, a police source said on Tuesday.
According to Niassa provincial police commander Aquilasse Kapangula, the Mozambican fishermen were suspected of using fine-mesh fishing nets, with the complicity of members of the Mozambican River Protection Authority.
As a result, a group of Malawian border guards entered a fishing camp in Mozambique on Thursday and fired shots in the air.
The situation prompted border guards on both sides to meet on Friday.
At the meeting, Kapangula said, it was concluded that “Malawians violated Mozambican territory”, while on the Mozambican side, “members of the Lake and River Protection Force had collaborated in the use of inappropriate nets”.
Kapangula said that six members of the force mentioned had been transferred while the investigations were under way.
