“In this Congress, we must take back the vanguard role,” – Graça Machel
Just minutes before the start of the Eleventh Frelimo Congress, there are many expectations of the ruling party’s deliberations. One member referring to these expectations is Graça Machel, who hopes that the event will serve for the “comrades” to make an in-depth analysis of the country’s political situation regarding effective and lasting peace, with a package that includes economic and social issues, “because we are a society that has become fragmented over the decades, and social issues are important for peacebuilding,” Machel said.
“I hope we can touch the soul of the people again through the way we do politics, how we behave as members,” she adds. “We need to revisit ourselves as a society. The country and the world have changed a lot. We must meet again and set the pace, resume the vanguard role that is ours. We must all think together. Regaining again the vanguard role is key.”
Manuel Tomé: Hopes that Congress will allow Frelimo to transform society
Former Frelimo Secretary-General Manuel Tomé Tomé says that expectations are high because there are many challenges.
Speaking to O País this morning, Tomé said: “I hope that the Congress brings new ideas and the party does not only transform itself when it has the capacity to transform society. The expectations are great because we have many challenges, economically, politically and peacefully.”
Tomaz Salomão: A Congress of important challenges
Tomaz Salomão, another Frelimo activist, said: “This congress takes place at a time when we have important challenges. First, the question of peace. Of course, the party chairman will give information on what is being done in that direction. Second, the question of the economy, and how it can generate employment and work for the people.”
A turning point in the search for definitive peace – Eduardo Mulémbwè
Eduardo Mulémbwè argues that the XI Frelimo Congress will no longer be just an event. Far from it. The former President of the Assembly of the Republic wants to take more value from the meeting that unites the “comrades” to discuss matters of national interest. “Each congress has its stage and this one will be marked by the search for progress and improvement in the living conditions of the Mozambican people. This will be a pivotal congress in the quest for ultimate peace in the country, in order to take Mozambique to a new level,” Mulembwé says.
Luisa Diogo: Confidence
Luisa Diogo spoke in the same vein. For him, the leadership of Filipe Nyusi leaves no doubt that Frelimo will solve the country’s main problems. She has confidence in the president of the party, noting that the country is making exceptional progress towards the recovery of the national economy. “Finally, we have more and more light at the end of the tunnel, and the confidence to pursue that light,” she says.
