Twenty-five people died in three road accidents in the provinces of Maputo and Tete over the weekend
Six fatalities occurred late yesterday morning on the EN4 in Txumene, Matola municipality, and eleven were injured when a Toyota Hiace mini-bus on the Matola-Txumene route collided with a Heymans-Cole Volvo truck.
Witnesses told Notícias that the truck, travelling at high speed, crashed into the mini-bus, which had stopped to let passengers alight. The violence of the crash dragged the minibus about fifty metres along the road.
The truck driver fled the scene of the accident, which stopped traffic in both directions for several hours.
The deadliest crash however occurred on Saturday morning on the EN1 in Xinavane, Maputo province, when fifteen people died and nine others sustained severe and minor injuries. This accident also involved a Toyota mini-buson the Manhiça-Incoluane route, registration ADB 828 MC, and a MAN truck, registration ADG 162 MC, travelling in the opposite direction.
Police said thirteen people died at the scene, and two other deaths occurring later among the injured passengers evacuated to Maputo Central Hospital. By yesterday afternoon, four of the injured were still in serious condition.
Police point to excessive speed and irregular overtaking as the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, in Tete, four other people died in the Cadjia, Moatize district, area on Saturday when their car, a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the Institute of Social Communication (ICS), rolled over. A further eight people were injured in the incident.
Among the victims was the ICS delegate in Tete, Jacinto Victor Jassitone, who was travelling to the Angónia district with relatives for his daughter‘s graduation ceremony.
Also during the weekend, road traffic on the EN1 was subject to restrictions in central Chicumbane, Gaza province between 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 am on Saturday, as a result of a lorry belonging to a company based in the Inharrime district of Inhambane shedding its load.
Apart from the inconvenience to commuters, there was no significant damage either human or material as a result of the accident.
