Mozambique: Central bank trying to raise foreign currency supply to aid business
More than half Mozambique’s 152 districts now have at least one bank branch, figures released by the government yesterday show.
“In early 2015, only 69 out of 152 districts had at least one agency,” but the number steadily rose to 84 and coverage from 45 to 55 percent of all districts, the government has announced.
The figures were released on the opening of a new branch in the northern province of Cabo Delgado on Wednesday under the “One district, one bank” project, which aims to provide access to banking and secure payment and saving in rural communities in the context of agricultural marketing processes.
The share of the adult population in Mozambique with a bank account is around 36 percent, just over a third, according to the latest Bank of Mozambique statistical bulletin, published in June.
In response to questions raised by Lusa earlier this month, the two main Mozambican banks (BIM and BCI) said they considered the figure unsatisfactory and reiterated the need to increase bank presence across the country.
The “One district, one bank” project was launched by President Nyusi a year ago, and has since seen the opening of 14 new branches, according to government figures.
