A security guard working for the London-based private security company G4S has died following an accidental shooting in the western Mozambican province of Tete.
The man, who has not been named, was shot by a colleague on a change of shift at the mine operated by the Brazilian company Vale, in the district of Moatize.
The spokesperson for the Tete Provincial Police Command, Lurdes Ferreira, confirmed the incident to AIM on Monday. She said that the guard shot has died, and that the man who opened fire has been detained on a charge of manslaughter.
“The information we have is that this happened when they were changing shift”, said Ferreira. “They say that the man who killed the other guard was handling the gun in an irregular fashion when he received it from his colleague”.
Declining to reveal the name of either man, Ferreira said an investigation is under way into the case, which she regarded as extremely odd.
“It is indeed strange”, she said. “There should be greater security in handling firearms to avoid this kind of accident, which can lead to loss of life”.
The case will now be sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, she added.
