Mozambique foresees renewable energy bringing electricity for all by 2030

The Mozambique government is to present a portfolio of renewable energy projects intended to guarantee universal access to electricity in the country by 2030 today.
About 332 villages across the country will get electricity from hydro and solar projects, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy predicts.
The project portfolio “identifies potential sites for project implementation based on solar, hydro or combined resources” which it is hoped will attract investment of around US$500 million.
“The initiative is intended to ensure that within a 15-year time horizon, the Mozambican population will have access to electricity thanks to small autonomous systems,” outside the national grid, the statement reads.
Within the scope of the objective, the Mozambican public Energy Fund and Galp Energia signed a partnership protocol for the installation of photovoltaic solar systems in five rural communities in the provinces of Maputo, Sofala, Manica and Cabo Delgado.
The two-year project is budgeted at EUR 545,000, and the energy will serve health centres, schools, water pumping systems and commercial establishments.
According to the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, more than 3.7 million Mozambicans benefited from new solar photovoltaic systems in 2005-2014, while solar energy now reaches 201 villages, 669 schools, 623 health centres and 77 public buildings.
A solar panel factory has come into operation within the same time frame, “accelerating the electrification of areas distant from the national power grid”.
