Minister of Transport and Communications Carlos Mesquita promised yesterday that the Mozambican government would provide public transport services for the residents of Beira and Dondo, in the centre of the country.
Mesquita was responding to the president of Beira Municipality, Daviz Simango, declining on Monday to accept the management of local public transport company in the country’s third-largest city.
“It is an issue that should continue to be discussed. The government will never abandon the residents of either Beira or Dondo. It will continue to provide all services due to them,” the minister said.
Mesquita said that, through dialogue and in full coordination with the municipality, public transport solutions would be found.
Simango justified the waiver of taking over the Beira public transport company (TPB) with its obvious lack of operating conditions. He raised doubts about payroll, vehicle breakdowns and lack of documentation covering the company’s debts to suppliers.
“We had hoped that these points would be answered by the government, but this did not happen,” Simango said.
The company was wound up at the beginning of the year with the intention of handing it over it to Beira and Dondo municipalities.
