A journalism student, who had been found dead in the early morning of Monday in the Aeroporto ‘A’ neighbourhood, in Maputo, was buried today in the Michafutene Cemetery.
The student was raped to death by unidentified men near her home when she returned from the Xipamanine Health Centre.
She was 23 years old and attended the 2nd year of the Journalism course at the Escola de Jornalismo, in the city of Maputo.
According to the victim’s brother, the crimes took place at around 3:00 am when she was returning from the Xipamanine Health Centre, where she had gone to get medical care due to an asthma attack.
“She has always suffered from asthma. At dawn, on Monday, she had a crisis around 3 o’clock and went to hospital. The hospital staff, because of the late hour, accompanied her here, close to home, and ten went back. But when she was about to enter the house, a group of men caught her and dragged her to the church, where she was raped to death,” he said.
According to her brother, only at around 5:00 am did the family become aware of the incident and all went to identify the body that was lying in the middle of the street and was later removed to the morgue of the Central Hospital of Maputo by a team from the National Service of Criminal Investigation (SERNIC).
The news not only shocked the family and the neighbourhood, but also the community of the Escola de Jornalismo, which immediately moved to offer solidarity and support to the bereaved family.
