Air travel in Mozambique: Foreign airlines to explore domestic routes

Ethiopian Airlines and Malawi Airlines have been selected in the tender launched last April by the Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM) to select companies to explore domestic air routes.

According to a document published in Maputo yesterday, the two companies will explore the domestic routes in competition with national operators LAM, Mozambique Expresso (MEX), CFM – Transportes e Trabalhos Aéreos SA, Transport and Air Works (TTA) and Solenta Aviation Mozambique SA.

Speaking to journalists in Maputo yesterday, IACM president João de Abreu said that LAM, MEX and Ethiopian Airlines had expressed an interest in exploring all the domestic routes indicated in the tender, while CFM-TTA, SA, Malawi Airlines, TTA and Solenta had expressed interest only in selective routes.

Five operators applied for international routes: CFM SA, LAM SA, Malawi Airlines, MEX SARL and TTA. Of these five companies, all but Malawi Airlines were selected.

João de Abreu said the companies selected now have 180 days to operationalise the routes, with failure to comply resulting in substitution by the substitute companies.

Ethiopian Airlines and Malawi Airlines would be required to register as national companies and to be licensed as national air carriers in accordance with legislation, while CFM and TTA would also need to regularise their licensing.

De Abreu says he believes more operators on both national and foreign routes will improve the quality of the services and the attractiveness of fares charged for air travel in Mozambique.
