Mozambique: Stewart Sukuma and Remna Schwarz Schwarz in Maputo concert this Tuesday
Brazil, Portugal and Mozambique have since Saturday been holding the fourth annual Meeting of Portuguese Language Poets. This year, the opening event took place at the Museum of the Republic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with authorities and poets from Angola, Brazil, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and Portugal in attendance.
The meeting of Lusophone poets will move to Lisbon on September 16 and end in Maputo on the 23rd.
The opening event launched a commemorative anthology called “All Tones of Poetry” featuring 299 poems by 133 poets from Portuguese-speaking countries celebrating in particular the Mozambican poet Rui de Noronha, the Portuguese poet Bocage and the Brazilian Cruz e Sousa.
In a press release, project mentor and coordinator Mariza Sorriso points out that the anthology presents the varied ways of writing poetry in Portuguese, as well as translating the human sensibility of different peoples.
“We wanted to bring together the largest number of Portuguese-speaking poets, including some who, for socio-economic reasons, would not have the chance to be heard or read, so we have poets of the most varied ages and levels of experience, including newcomers,” Sorriso said.
In addition to the book launch, there are to be interviews with poets of various nationalities and performances of music from each Portuguese-speaking country.
After Rio de Janeiro, the event goes to the Independence Palace in Lisbon, where there will be a talk with the writer Luís Filipe Correia Mendes about the importance of integrating Lusophone poets into the Portuguese language.
The closing of the fourth gathering of poets will take place on September 23 at the Polytechnic University in Maputo, when information about next year’s event in Brazil, Portugal and Angola will be announced.
