Mozambique: Mobility is once again restricted in Hulene
O País
A pack of at least five dogs killed a security guard on Sunday night at a condominium in the central Mozambican city of Beira, according to a report on the independent television station STV.
The guard, 60 year old Pedro Simao, was bitten repeatedly on various parts of his body, and the dogs tore his clothes to shreds. There was no first aid to hand, and Simao died shortly after the attack.
The condominium is owned by a Portuguese citizen (so far unnamed), who seemed much more concerned about STV filming on his property than he was about the savage death of Simao. He mobilised other guards to try and keep the reporters away from what he insisted was “private property”.
He became aggressive towards the reporters, threatening them and calling them “bandits”. He showed no signs of remorse at the death of Simao, and his abusive behaviour was all caught on camera.
The spokesperson for the Sofala Provincial Police Command, Daniel Macuacua, said investigations so far had shown that Simao was attacked when he went to a part of the condominium that was normally patrolled by one of his colleagues, who was absent at the time.
Macuacua said the owner of the dogs showed the police documents proving that the animals had been vaccinated against rabies. But the fact that the dogs were not rabid will be of little comfort to Simao’s family.
The police have promised that they will prosecute the owner.
