The Mozambican government has more than 18 million dollars available for the electrification of the last four districts whose capitals re not yet connected to the national grid.
These four districts are all in the Zambezi Valley in the centre of the country – they are Luabo, Mulevala and Derre in Zambezia province and Doa in Tete.
Cited in Friday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Leticia Klemens, said that the other 150 districts in the country are already connected to the grid.
Work on electrifying the four districts will begin this week and is scheduled to end in mid-2018. The electrification will benefit an estimated 250,000 consumers.
Klemens said that extending the national grid to Luabo, Mulevala, Derre and Doa will stimulate the economic and social development of these districts. The electrification will give more households access to power to raise their living standards, and will encourage agro-processing initiatives.
Klemens was speaking during a visit to the Ceramica electricity substation in the Zambezia district of Nicoadala. Work on building this substation began in February and is now about 25 per cent complete.
The Minister said the work is going according to plan, and the construction is obeying international quality standards, using state-of-the-art imported equipment. It is hoped that this sub-station will improve the quality of electricity supplied to the Zambezia provincial capital, Quelimane.
