Foreign investment in Mozambique may be at risk – Ambassadors tell Balói

Speaking on behalf of several countries represented in Mozambique, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Netherlands in Mozambique, Jan Huesken, has said that the international community is following political developments in Mozambique with concern.

The diplomat says that investors in the country are the most apprehensive, and asked the Mozambican government to note that this is a decisive year for investments in the Rovuma basin, with US multinational Anadarko and the Italian ENI poised to make their biggest investments ever in Southern Africa.

“Peace and democracy are two important factors in the economic and social potential of a country. Security and political stability are essential conditions for the life of all Mozambican citizens and development of the country. How do you attract and maintain investments in a tense situation?” Huesken asked.

On Thursday, the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation met accredited diplomats in the country in a closed meeting. No details of the discussions were revealed, but a spokesman said that the international partners were satisfied with the solutions that the government gave, namely dialogue as the solution to the current armed confrontation, which is confined to the centre of the country.
