The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday welcomed the Mozambican authorities’ decision to increase the price of electricity, given that the measure preserves social tariff relief for low-income consumers.
“The International Monetary Fund welcomes the Mozambican Authorities’ decision to adjust as of August 15, 2017, the electricity tariffs. The tariff adjustment should help contain the operational losses of the national electricity company (EDM) and protect the state budget, while preserving a “social” tariff for low income and most vulnerable consumers,” a statement signed by the IMF representative in Maputo Ari Aisen says.
The price of electricity increased from yesterday in Mozambique, with domestic consumers paying 6.95 meticais (0.90 euros) per kilowatt-hour against the previous 5.14 meticais (0.71 euros). PRESUMABLY THIS MEAN 0.71 euros).
In a statement distributed on Monday evening, EDM reports that the increase is aimed at consumers using the prepaid platform.
Consumers of the postpaid platform will see prices rise by an average increase of two meticais (0.027 euros) per kilowatt-hour.
The note indicates that low-income customers, whose consumption ranges from zero to 125 kilowatt-hours, will continue to pay a tariff of 1.075 meticais (0.014 euros) per kilowatt-hour.
In the statement, EDM justifies the tariff adjustment, the second increase in energy prices in ten months, with the need to keep pace with increases in production costs.
