Fares on inter-district public transport routes in Manica province will increase from the 28th of this month, president of the Association of Passenger Carriers of Manica (ATPM) Alfredo Canhenze revealed on Monday.
The 20 percent increase was due to the purchase costs of vehicles, accessories and fuels, he said. The fare increase was approved by the Manica provincial government after analysis of the ATPM proposal.
“Fares will go from 1.07 to 1.25 meticais per kilometre. It’s all due to rising operating costs, not necessarily just fuel. In fact, acquisition and maintenance costs of vehicles have increased greatly,” Canhenze explained.
Maria António travels the Chimoio-Gondola route daily. She currently pays 25 meticais, but this is expected to increase to 30 meticais. She says the price hike is “unbearable”.
