“Banned from covering President Nyusi’s visit to Sofala” – Canal de Moçambique

“The name of your newspaper was excluded by the Commission of Major Events and by the Office of the Press of the Provincial Government, by orders that came from above,” Rufino Vicente, from the Sofala governor’s office, told Canalmoz.

Sofala provincial government gave orders to stop the weekly newspaper “Canal de Moçambique” and its electronic diary “Canalmoz” covering President Nyusi’s visit to the province, a decision communicated to the newspaper by the governor’s press office.

President Nyusi arrived in Sofala from Maputo on Thursday.

“We were informed that “Canal de Moçambique” was excluded from the list of eighteen invited journalists representing the different national media based in Sofala by “orders from above”, Rufino Vicente, ex-Radio Moçambique journalist currently assigned to the Sofala governor’s office, revealed.

Contacted for clarification, Social Communication Institute provincial delegate Sílvia Afonso, who normally manages presidential visits, confirmed the ban, explaining: “The newspaper ‘Canal de Moçambique’ is not contemplated to cover the presidential visit. I also received orders from above to work with this original list. I do not have to change supreme orders. It’s best to contact the Cabinet or Mr. Zaqueu, who gave me the final list.”

The Governor’s Office

Mr. Zaqueu, press attaché of the governor of Sofala, who combines these functions with those of Commission of Major Events officer in the region, said that the newspaper was excluded by orders of the presidency.

“The list was sent with all the media that should be part of it, but we were informed by the presidency that your newspaper could not be included in the list covering the event,” he said, adding: “The name of your newspaper was also excluded by the Commission of Major Events and by the Press Office in the Provincial Government.”
