Nyusi congratulates Kagame on his re-election

President Filipe Nyusi has congratulated his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame on his re-election last Friday for a third term as his country’s president.

In a presidency message copied to AIM, Nyusi expresses his readiness to continue working with Kagame in strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

“Mr President and Dear Brother, it was with great satisfaction that I took note of your re-election as President of the Republic of Rwanda. Your Excellency’s convincing victory symbolises your unquestioning devotion to serving the People of Rwanda over these years, hence the trust placed in your leadership,” the message reads.

According to the note, Nyusi believes that Kagame’s leadership will continue to propel Ruanda into development and “greater prosperity and well-being”.

Nyusi also extends his congratulations to the orderly manner in which the Rwandans took part in the voting process.

“On behalf of the People and Government of Mozambique, and on my own behalf, we convey our sincere congratulations to you, Mr. President, for the victory; and to the people of Rwanda, for the free, fair and orderly way in which the election took place,” the message reads.

With more than 90 percent of votes in favour, 59-year-old Kagame defeated the only opposition candidate, Frank Habineza, as well as an independent candidate.

Friday’s election comes after a constitutional amendment, approved by 98 percent of voters, which allows Kagame to remain in power until 2034.

About 12 million voters participated in the elections.
