Labour Consultative Commission proposes 6-months cut in maternity allowance – Mozambique

The Mozambican Consultative Commission on Labour (CCT) has proposed reducing maternity allowance entitlement in Mozambique from the current 18 to 12 months.
According to the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM), the third plenary session of the CCT, a tripartite body made up of the government, employers and trade unions, approved the proposal by consensus.
Speaking to the press after the meeting in Maputo, CCT secretary general João Loforte said that consensus came after mistakes have been made in the allocation of the maternity allowance.
“The guaranteed period for women’s access to the maternity allowance will be 18 instead of 12 months,” the Mozambican Information Agency quotes Loforte as saying.
The government pegged the daily maternity allowance to the average daily wage of workers enrolled in the national social security system. It can be claimed up to 20 days before the expected date of birth and is paid monthly up to the last day of the maternity period.
According to the statement, the proposal will now be submitted to the Council of Ministers.
