The National Penitentiary Service of Mozambique (SERNAP) announced yesterday that 17 prisoners had escaped from Beira central jail in the centre of the country in the previous 24 hours, leaving in two vehicles for destinations unknown.
In a statement, SERNAP says that an unspecified number of prison guards were detained following the escape and remain in custody.
The press release states that 10 of the escapees were already convicted and seven were being held in pre-trial detention.
The escape occurred after the official responsible for the security of the penitentiary at the time relieved some guards from duty before normal and opened a number cells, after which he went and opened the main prison gate.
One of the prison guards was found inside a Toyota car used, along with a Ford Ranger, to transport the fugitives.
“Investigations continue to determine the circumstances, causes and conditions that gave rise to the break-out,” the SERNAP communiqué reveals.
