Beira-Machipanda: EN6 rehabilitation works 65% complete – Watch

The rehabilitation and extension works of National Road Number Six (EN6), linking the port city of Beira in Sofala province with Machipanda near the border with Zimbabwe in Manica province are now 65 percent complete, President Filipe Nyusi was told by the Chinese contractor AFECC when he visited works at the Inchope crossing in Gondola district on Saturday.

The road’s total length is 288 kilometres, with three tolls, two in Sofala (Nhamatanda and Dondo) and one in Manica (Chimoio). The total cost of the project is US$410 million, of which US$57 million is for inspection, financed by the Government of Mozambique and China’s Exim Bank.

According to the contractor, works has been proceeding according to plan, with 75 percent of the Chimoio toll (in Manica), 90 percent of the Nhamatanda and 70 percent of the Dondo tolls (both in Sofala ) so far built.

The Manica maintenance centre is 50 percent complete and the Sofala maintenance centre, 20 percent.

In parallel with the laying of the pavement, which is at an advanced stage, what the contractor considers ‘works of art’, namely the Inchope viaduct at the junction between the EN6 and EN1, and the new bridge over the Pungue River, currently at 15.4 and 90 percent completion respectively, are also proceeding within expectations.

“We continue to face the challenge of moving housing, commercial establishments and energy and water infrastructure on the roadside,” the contractor says, while nonetheless promising that the project, started in April 2016, will be completed by March 31, 2018.

President Nyusi used the occasion of his visit to encourage the contractor to complete the project, which employs 3,036 national and 471 foreign workers, by the deadline.
