President Filipe Nyusi has urged the population to be on guard against disinformation in the ongoing census process. He made his the appeal at a rally in Guro district, Manica, on Thursday, during his working visit to the province.
This was his second rally the day, having in the morning led another in Tambara, where he also inaugurated a bridge over the Muira River on the main road linking the two districts.
The Fourth Population and Housing Census started on August 1st country-wide, and is scheduled to end on the 15th of this month.
“We know there are people who are misinforming. They are harming people, because there is no country in the world that does not know how many people there are living there. Is only Mozambique going to start being a country not knowing how many citizens it has?” he asked.
Nyusi said that the census aimed to establish the extent of the problems that Mozambique faces and thus better target resources for the provision of services.
“For banks to come, the governor needs to be able to say that there are a lot of people in Guro, because they can only set up in business where there is money,” President Nyusi offered as an example.
“Young people who are going to register will come to your homes. They are our children, brothers, nephews. We ask that you receive them well, as they are trained to ask questions,” the president urged.
The president expressed his satisfaction with the number of political parties involved in raising public awareness of the process.
“Anybody who wants to be a Mozambican, wants to be a person from Manica or Guro, even foreigners living here, should go register so we know how many tablets to bring, how many books. For us to establish if this road you want is worth laying, or whether we should build it in another district. For that, you must register,” he said.
The 2017 census was just one of three topics Nyusi addressed before presiding over an extraordinary session of the provincial government, the others being peace and productivity.
On peace, Nyusi emphasized the need to continue living in harmony, tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation among Mozambicans.
On the issue of agricultural production, he expressed satisfaction that the Guro district and the province of Manica in general had responded to calls for increased production and productivity, encouraging the population to continue their efforts so that, by 2018, the country would no longer have to import food, and urging them to start preparing for the next growing season right away.
Before his visit ends on Saturday, Nyusi will also visit Manica and Gondola districts and the provincial capital Chimoio,.
