Mozambique: Inhambane Provincial Hospital struggles with blood shortage
The body of a 13-year-old girl was found in Mueda district, Cabo Delgado province last week with her head severed and organs removed in what police believe to be a case of human organ trafficking.
The girl, identified as Doroteia Luís, was seized by her attackers on a public road, dragged into the bush and murdered. Her assailants then cut off her head and extracted her digestive organs, genitals and heart, police spokesman Cláudio Langa said. An investigation is under way.
Mozambique deputy prosecutor general Amabélia Chuquela said that at least 11 people were trafficked in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Manica, Tete and Zambézia in the first half of the current year. Extraction of human organs, forced labour, sexual exploitation and forced prostitution were the main motivations.
In other crime news, a 26-year-old male allegedly surprised in the act of stealing was killed by a mob in Monapo district, Nampula province. The individuals involved are so far unknown, but police are making enquiries to establish the identity of those responsible.
The body of the deceased was taken to the local hospital morgue and “due diligence with regard to the detention of the perpetrators of the crime continues”, a police spokesman said.
