General Population and Housing Census begins today

President Filipe Nyusi’s household will be the first to be registered by the fourth General Population and Housing Census, which starts today and lasts until the 15th of this month throughout the country.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) says that all the necessary human and material resources are in place, and the operation will cover all people living in Mozambique, whether national or foreign, including those in hospitals, barracks, hotels and similar places.

INE spokeswoman Cirilo Tembe said that the families of the former presidents Joaquim Chissano and Armando Guebuza and of parliamentary Speaker Verónica Macamo Ndlovu would also head up operations this morning.

Tembe said aim of the Census was to determine the number of inhabitants of Mozambique and characteristics such as age, marital status, language, profession and education and the type of housing in which they live.

The operation is expected to cover close to 5 million households and more than 27 million people are expected to be registered. The 2007 census found 20.8 million inhabitants in Mozambique, a number expected to exceed 27.1 million this time round.

In order to allow all households to be surveyed, census takers will give warning of their visits, and if a family is unavailable to receive them on that day, it can arrange a more convenient date as long as it is within the census period.

The census has mobilised 196,000 people, including census takers, controllers, guides, drivers and support staff. There are 131 four-wheel drive vehicles available, as well as 750 motorcycles and 10,000 thousand bicycles, all to be used exclusively for the collection of census data.
