In collaboration with Mozambican authorities, the Brazilian attorney general’s office has facilitated the taking of statements from people residing in Brazil in support of the investigation into the allegedly corrupt purchase of two Embraer aircraft by Mozambique Airlines between 2007 and 2009.
This week, Mozambican prosecutors went to Brazil to participate in the hearing of current and former Embraer employees in Sao Paulo, where the company headquarters is located. The statements were taken by Brazilian attorney general Angelo Augusto Costa.
The Secretariat of International Cooperation of the Brazilian attorney general has also acted as go-between in the sending to the Mozambican authorities of information provided by Embraer at the request of the Mozambican public prosecutor.
The Brazilian company signed a leniency agreement with the Brazilian and Mozambican attorney general’s offices in February of this year, in which it undertakes to provide all the information and documents requested by the authorities. This was the first multilateral leniency agreement signed by the attorney general’s office.
Cooperation between the two countries is governed by the Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters between the Member States of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (Decree 8.833 / 2016). The attorney general’s office is one of the primary authorities for requests in criminal matters under the convention.
