Maputo gained another shopping option yesterday with the opening of a new Shoprite supermarket in the Zimpeto neighbourhood.
The new South African-owned establishment will reduce the distance residents of the area have to travel to do their shopping, and will benefit resident so nearby neighbourhoods and the district of Marracuene.
“We’ve been waiting for a supermarket for a long time. We have a wholesale market, among other commercial establishments, but there are products that only a supermarket can offer,” one shopper said.
According to store representative Paulo de Oliveira, the supermarket is backing local suppliers and 90 percent of the meats and fresh produce stocked are produced locally.
This gels with remarks from Sidónio dos Santos, Maputo’s Director of Industry and Commerce, who says that supplying national products to supermarkets is a government commitment intended to boost trade and agricultural and livestock production.
