Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday enacted the Atomic Energy Act plus legislation defining new localities and the statutes of justice officials, a statement from the presidency revealed yesterday.
“These laws were recently approved by the Assembly of the Republic and submitted to the President of the Republic for promulgation, and the Head of State verified that they do not contravene the fundamental law [Constitution],” the press release said.
President Nyusi also enacted legislation creating new administrative posts in provinces and districts and the new Statute of Officials of Justice and Assistants of Courts, Constitutional Council and Public Prosecution Service Officers.
The Atomic Energy Act was passed in April by parliament and provides for a peaceful and safe legal regime to protect people, property and the environment from any accidents or acts of sabotage involving radioactive material.
The law follows directives from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which will later be reinforced by the setting up of a national atomic energy agency in Mozambique, the statement reads.
It explains that activities involving radioactive materials can be licensed, but only if the benefits clearly outweigh any possible risks. Entities dealing with such materials are responsible for the safe disposal of any waste.
The law expressly prohibits the importing of radioactive waste, as well as the production, purchase or importing of nuclear weapons.
