Border visa to cost 50 dollars – Mozambique

The Mozambican government has set the cost of border visas at 50 US dollars for all visitors entering the country, as part of a number of initiatives to ease and remove barriers which prevent the growth of the tourism sector.

This is the culmination of a joint diploma signed between the Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, and his counterpart from the Interior, Basílio Monteiro.

The Interior Minister, who announced this latest decision this Tuesday, in Maputo, shortly after the end of the XXV ordinary session of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), said that the sum of 50 US dollars seems to be a “reasonable fee”, since it compares with other countries in the region. He also said that the fee is about three to seven dollars lower than the average of the Southern Africa region.

Monteiro declared that the number of border visas has increased significantly over the last three months, reaching a peak of just over 11,900. This situation is encouraging since it’s a reflection of the improvement of the economy of the country.

“We have registered a total of 11,904 border visas issued by the tourism sector, up from 9,000 reported in the first quarter”, he added.

As for the complaint of tourists about the excessive number of police checkpoints, Monteiro said that “this is an operational issue and should not interfere with the visas”.

He added that once “a tourist enters the country, there are very strong rules to remove any threats.”

The government recently approved the Border Visas Decree as one of the measures to introduce legislative reforms to improve business environment by simplifying procedures to promote greater access for business.

Tourism is one of the four priority areas defined by the government to boost Mozambique’s development. The other three are agriculture, energy and infrastructures.
