Mozambique: H1 State revenue €2.3B, GDP down 3.9% - govt
The Moamba Major dam construction project launched in October 2014 in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, is virtually paralysed due to lack of funding.
The project, on the Incomati river in Moamba, is budgeted at just over US$466 million. In addition to irrigating 19,000 hectares of agricultural land and supplying water to the greater Maputo region, the dam would also produce electricity for the national grid.
Mozambican Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Bonete, said that the project was virtually at a standstill because of lack of funds, and was unable to offer any prospect of the project’s resumption.
The construction of the dam is largely dependent on funds made available by Brazil, whose current government has suspended almost all financing agreements concluded by the former executive pending analysis.
In Mozambique’s case, the Moamba Major dam and the construction of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) tracks between the centre of Maputo and the Praça da Juventude [Youth Square] are affected.
According to the project schedule, the Moamba Major dam should be operational in 2019, but when the infrastructure will be completed is now uncertain.
