The Judicial Court of Nampula province in northern Mozambique has detected 20 cases of release of detainees in exchange for money, a judge has said, and an investigation is underway to determine the degree of involvement of judicial officials in the sale of release orders from the province’s jails.
The cases were uncovered during a national campaign of trials targeting extended pre-trial detention.
Quoted this Saturday (22.07) by the newspaper Notícias, Judge-president Alberto Assane said that the situation stemmed from the lack of identification documents of some defendants at the time of detention, and also from the penitentiary system not having computerised records.
“We want to identify defendants in this situation and correct matters as quickly as possible,” he said.
The trials that took place on July 13 and 14 at the Regional Penitentiary Norte in Nampula convicted 79 and acquitted 24 of the 192 cases tried and involved 75 legal practitioners.
The national campaign of trials started on June 12 with financial support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It targets the approximately 1,300 individuals whose pre-trial detention has exceeded deadlines and is aimed at decongesting the country’s prisons.
