Contributors to the Mozambican Social Security System owe over 1.2 billion meticais. (The US dollar is worth about 61 meticais.)
At the beginning of 2016, 19,235 contributors owed more than 770 million meticais and in March 2017, 24,268 contributors owed 1,235 million.
A statement from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MITESS) sent to AIM says these figures were established by coordinated action between the General Inspectorate of Labour (IGT) and the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).
“In the period in question, 7,736 taxpayers owing 815,920,914.39 meticais were questioned, and 138,607,714.96 meticais was collected under the National Campaign for Taxpayer Debt promoted by the National Institute of Social Security” the statement reads.
The figures came to light at the eighteenth MITESS Coordinating Council, held last week in Matola in Maputo province.
