Beira, capital of central Sofala province, will on Wednesday host a Southern African Development Community (SADC) meeting of Transport ministers who have direct links with the country’s three development corridors in the south, centre and north, APA can report on Sunday.
“The meeting of ministers will be attended by ministers of transport from Mozambique, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, and will culminate in the approval and signing of two memoranda of understanding on the Beira and North-South Development Corridors”, read a statement from the Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Communications.
Mozambique’s three growth centres include the Maputo, Beira and Nacala corridors, and are strategically important to the country’s neighbours, especially landlocked Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.
The meeting to be held in the central and port city of Beira is part of the efforts of the governments and beneficiaries of these corridors to stimulate and maximise the exploitation of the latent potential.
At the meeting, according to the statement, aspects of planning and development of quality strategic infrastructure necessary to enable the volumes of traffic of goods and passengers in growth in those corridors will be addressed.
Mozambique’s own infrastructure deficit reflects a situation existing across Sub-Saharan Africa, where the potential of exploiting untapped national resources is being held back by the absence of road, rail and port networks to get the oil, gas and minerals out easily to world markets.
