Voter registration for the 2018 municipal elections will take place in all areas of local authority jurisdiction from March 1 to April 29 of next year. On previous occasions, registration lasted only 45 days.
The approval of the calendar presented by the National Election Commission (CNE) was announced after the Council of Ministers meeting yesterday by spokeswoman Ana Comoana.
Comoana said that approval was based on law number 8/2014 of March 12, which determines the validity of voter registration is for each electoral cycle, and explained that the purpose of voter registration was to ensure that the database was updated to reflect the enlargement of the voter base.
“The census will occur in local authority areas and the forecast is that about eight million voters will be covered during the 60 days it will take,” Comoana said. In order to achieve this goal, the CNE foresees more polling stations and personnel than previously.
CNE president Abdul Carimo Sau recently said that all necessary conditions for the creation of an electoral register “from scratch” were in place, and that the announcement of the dates themselves was dependant on Council of Ministers approval.
The CNE says it has guarantees of all the funds needed to finance the fifth municipal elections, which are scheduled for October 10 next year in 59 cities and municipal towns.
