Niassa: Marrupa to get transit centre for vulnerable children and elderly

The municipal village of Marrupa, in the Niassa district of the same name, is to get a transit centre for vulnerable people after First Lady Isaura Nyusi laid the first stone of construction works last Saturday.

The centre, costing nearly two million meticais according to Diário de Moçambique (1981802,40 meticais), is financed by Marrupa Municipal Council and is mainly intended to cater for vulnerable children and the elderly.

The centre will have male and female dormitories, a kitchen, a dining room, an office for the director and a parking space. Construction was awarded to Rino Construções and is expected to be completed within the next 90 days.

Basílio Vasco, District Director of Health, Women and Social Action, says the centre will also benefit people coming to Marrupa Rural Hospital from distant locations, who are unable to return home immediately after treatment.

“People from the administrative posts and the districts of Mecula, Maúa and Nipepe who come here for treatment, once better, will be able to stay if for some reason they are unable to return home straight away,” Vasco said.

Marrupa mayor Marta Romeu said that the laying of the first stone of the centre’s construction was the materialisation of another promise made to the public during the election campaign.

“We are pleased because, besides being a transit centre, the centre will also offer disadvantaged children from our municipality shelter and care,” she said.

First Lady Isaura Nyusi praised the initiative, saying it would help alleviate the suffering of the disadvantaged in Marrupa, Mecula, Nipepe and Maúa. She appealed to the company responsible for construction to meet the deadlines and carry out quality work.
