Health sector in Mozambique may miss targets due to lack of money

The Mozambican Ministry of Health may fail to conduct some activities planned for 2018 because of lack of money, Deputy Director of Planning Lídia Chongo has warned.
“We will have to adjust the few resources we have available because of the context in which we find ourselves in these priority areas,” Chongo said on the sidelines of a Ministry of Health meeting on planning in Maputo, the daily O País reported yesterday.
Chongo said that malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS continued to be the main challenges for the public sector, as well as the expansion of the health network throughout the country.
“We are concerned about expanding the health network, providing basic care, and also about medicines management,” Chongo said, adding that the spread of hypertension and cancer was also cause for concern.
“These diseases are becoming common in our country, and cannot be ignored,” she said, noting that one of the strategies was to facilitate access to breast cancer screening for all women of childbearing age.
According to Ministry of Finance figures, the total amount of money allocated to health in 2017 was 21,143.8 million meticais, or 10.1 percent of the total state budget.
