The Chinese government has pledged to disburse 60 million yuan (about 8.8 million US dollars at current exchange rates), for the construction of military barracks in the southern Mozambican province of Maputo. The donation is part of a package of Chinese support for the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM).
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a press conference in Maputo given by Minister of Defence Salvador M’tumuke. This followed an audience granted by President Filipe Nyusi to China’s Minister of Defence, Chang Wanquan.
M’tumuke added that during the presidential audience, Chang Wanquan had delivered a message from China’s President Xi Jinping to his Mozambican counterpart.
The Chinese Minister of Defence began his visit to Mozambique on Monday, which is part of a three-nation African tour.
M’tumuke stressed the importance of the visit, which serves as an opportunity to strengthen the relations of cooperation, friendship and solidarity between the two peoples and countries, which date back to the 1960s. He expressed the intention of the Mozambican authorities to further develop cooperation with China in the areas of training, infrastructure, logistics and military health with a view to making the Mozambican Armed Forces better able to carry out its mission.
Chang Wanquan said that the programmes currently being implemented are the result of the consensus reached between the two countries during the state visit of President Nyusi to China in May 2016.
Chang Wanquan also stressed that peace and stability are preponderant factors for Mozambique’s development.
