The president has responded to critics and says his visits to the provinces work.
President Nyusi began a working visit to Inhambane yesterday with a popular rally at the Maculuva administrative post in Zavala district, where he delivered a message to critics of his work methodology.
“There are those who ask, but what did the president go there for? There are those who are worried and ask, what will he say?” Nyusi asked. His reply? “Let us not speak ill of anyone. It is a father who went to see his son, a son who went to visit his father. What we have come to do is, with you, work and learn what the concerns are. The one who’s worried, let him or her be worried – we are working,” he said, without naming the ‘worried’ detractors.
Regarding concerns, the Maculuva community asked for electricity, improved roads linking the EN1 and the post office, and the setting up of a cashew processing plant. In response, Filipe Nyusi said their concerns would be met.
“We will see to the problem of water throughout the province (Inhambane). We will see to the energy problem and access roads, and we will also see to the issue of schools and hospitals where there are none,” he promised.
Cost of living
The high cost of essential products was also mentioned in interactions with the public.
After highlighting factors behind the situation such as the international environment, Nyusi urged the population to increase production and productivity as one of the main ways to minimize the impact of high prices.
President Nyusi acknowledged Inhambane’s efforts in food production, hit over the last two years by El Niño and Cyclone Dineo, and took the opportunity to re-launch a national challenge to intensify agricultural activity, taking advantage of the peace situation.
“We invest in peace because we know it is one of the main conditions for us to produce,” he said.
Market
On the first day of his visit, Nyusi inaugurated the First National Fair of Tubers and Roots in Quissico, the headquarters of the Zavala district.
Under the motto “Valuing Roots and Tubers for Nutrition and Sustainable Social and Economic Development”, the fair aims to promote the crops, which are of recognized nutritional and medicinal value and, according to Nyusi, are also one of the solutions to reduce levels of malnutrition, especially among children.
Starting today, the president will visit Panda, Morrumbene and Mabote districts. His visit to Inhambane ends on Sunday.
