President Nyusi is conducting a working visit to the province of Inhambane from today to Saturday, holding popular rallies and meetings with the district governments of Zavala, Panda, Mabote and Morrumbene and various sectors of society, and visiting enterprises of economic and social interest.
According to Notícias, Nyusi will revitalise the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by cyclone Dineo, as well as checking on the progress of various development projects discussed at the recent investment conference.
The population of Inhambane can expect to hear a renewed appeal from the head of state on the need for their unconditional involvement in the process of achieving lasting peace.
At a time when the province is still struggling to mobilise financial and material resources to replace infrastructure damaged by the cyclone which struck the region last February and by floods in January, the population of Inhambane expects the president to focus on raising awareness so that more partners become involved in helping rebuild affected areas.
The population understands that the visit of the head of state comes at a time when the local administrative structures are committed to following the schedule of scheduled activities, so that the eight promises of financing the development projects come to fruition.
Agricultural production
The president of the Inhambane Hospitality and Tourism Association, José da Cunha, said that the presidential visit was an important platform for helping to gauge and address the information contained in the reports and the reality on the ground.
“President Nyusi will check whether his guidelines are being met or not. In my view, food production is a success and the result is that commodity prices have fallen substantially in the markets. There is plenty!” he said.
He bemoaned, however, the damage caused by Cyclone Dineo, which hit actions to combat poverty in the province hard.
“The province and the country were forced to divert resources for reconstruction after the cyclone, in lieu of development actions. I hope that this visit will boost the implementation of the promises of finance for development projects and that other investors, who have not yet spoken at the investment conference, will choose Inhambane to explore business opportunities,” he said.
Agro-processing bet
Fashion designer Lurdes Machava said that one of the messages she expects from the president was the consolidation of agro-processing, so that the province could exploit its potential and thus relaunch its economy.
“After the investment conference, our expectation was to see the promised financing for new projects and reconstruction materialize. As a fashion designer, I would like to see the Jangamo cotton plant working, to stop importing fabrics, so my expectation is that the visit will galvanise investors to explore the business opportunities the province offers,” she said.
Among other planned activities, Nyusi will attend the first root and tuber fair in the village of Quissico, Zavala district, inaugurate a water supply system in the village of Morrumbene, and inaugurate a bank branch in Mabote district in the framework of the presidential “One District, One Bank” initiative.
