In the last week, the price of domestic gas has seen one of the biggest declines in recent years – and families are celebrating the good news.
“We used coal, but as gas has gone down, we’ve gone back to using gas,” says Lucas Chicavele says. For Lucas, the new prices makes a lot of difference, And yesterday was the day he and many other consumers decided to refill their bottles.
Lucas has not bought any gas since December last year no gas was bought because of the high prices. “This is the first time we have bought gas since the end of last year. Things were not easy,” he says.
Paulo Guilherme was spending more than 2,300 meticais a month on gas for his family of 10. Now, with the reduction of the price, he’s feeling a lot more comfortable.
“Cylinders costing 443 meticals is going to make for a huge reduction in gas costs per month. We ‘re saving about 1 200 meticais a month,” he says.
However, the reduction in prices has increased demand, and there was no gas at the Praça dos Combatentes outlet in Maputo on Sunday. The latest delivery of 300 cylinders sold out in less than 24 hours.
Empty gas bottles at the sales stand located near Praça da OMM told the same story, with the back and forth showing no signs of let-up. Their latest 300-cylinder delivery sold out on less than five hours.
