Mozambique: Police disperse Mondlane supporters with gunfire, tear gas in Maputo
President Filipe Nyusi has expressed his solidarity with the victims of the forest fire in Pedrógão, Leiria, central Portugal.
In a message addressed to the Portuguese government and people, Nyusi acknowledged the commitment and courage of the Portuguese government in minimising the tragedy caused by the disaster.
“We witness with great admiration the commitment of the Portuguese Government, and the courageous and untiring work of all the teams and civil protection authorities mobilised to quell the destructive fire and take measures to minimise the tragedy caused by this disaster,” the message reads.
The head of state said he was very moved on learning of the tragedy, as the victims had no alternative shelter. “I ask Your Excellencies to convey to the bereaved families our expressions of our deep sorrow and solidarity,” he wrote.
Provisional figures indicate at least 64 people have died and more than 150 have been injured by the fire, which started in Escalos Fundeiros and spread to Figueiró dos Vinhos and Castanheira de Pera. The flames spread as far as neighbouring districts Castelo Branco and Coimbra.
